Little Horse Tavern is a nod to Charlie Sifford, a pioneer who opened doors in golf.

Little Horse Tavern takes its name from Charlie Sifford, a pioneering African American golfer whose home course was the Cobbs Creek Golf & Educational Campus in the 1950s. On the PGA Tour, Sifford was known by his nickname “Little Horse,” a reflection of his strength, determination, and resolve.

He often wore a small horse pendant, a personal symbol of perseverance and self-belief. In 1961, Sifford became the first African American to earn a PGA Tour card. He went on to win the 1967 Greater Hartford Open and the 1975 Los Angeles Open, and in 2006 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Sifford’s journey represents more than athletic achievement. It is a story of courage, integrity, and progress. His legacy continues at Cobbs Creek and inspires the welcome that defines Little Horse Tavern today.
